In order to improve the quality of new construction projects and the Latvian urban environment, the Latvian Council for Sustainable Building was founded late last year.

Latvian Council for Sustainable Building

Our aim is to promote the development of sustainable building in Latvia that complies with environmental limitations, meet contemporary requirements regarding comfort and quality, while remaining socially and financially sound. By this joining together of entrepreneurs and NGO representatives, a platform has been created for implementing sustainable building ideas on the level of individual projects and the political level alike. In cooperation with professionals in the construction sector, environmental organisations, companies and associations in related sectors, Latvian assessment and certification system for sustainable building has been developed based on BREEAM, the British Research Establishment Method.

What is a sustainable building? What is sustainable construction?

The difference between a “modern” building and a sustainable building is that the latter presents a much broader understanding of the interaction between the building, user and environment, as well as its effects. In a sustainable building, more important than its appearance or modern technologies it is supposed to contain are the microclimate and quality of the internal environment, the real energy consumption and its sources, the link to the external infrastructure, the impact of the building materials on human health and natural resources, and optimal preservation of biodiversity in the surrounding environment.

The construction of a sustainable building starts with the careful development of its concept even before the selection of a particular location, and it continues throughout the design, construction process planning, building and commissioning stages.
